accessories - historic and contemporary crafts

accessories - historic and contemporary crafts

for the book accompanying the exhibition ‘dutch design in the house of orange palace’, uniquole is researching accessories, their function, as well as methods of production in the past and present. where in the past the worth of a piece of jewellery depended on the amount of diamonds it contained, nowadays people focus on form, identity and the general ‘feel’ of the work, or what message a bag or piece of jewellery conveys. the production processes for creating accessories is very interesting. looking into the various workplaces shows colour sorted materials, books filled with various

templates, large tables covered in fabric, leather and ribbons. do contemporary designers still work using the same methods? has the gold or silver smith profession changed over the years?
royal house archives photo collection: a piece of jewellery belonging to queen emma, which she received from her husband, king willem III, on their wedding day. loan for use is being requested by house of orange-nassau historic collections trust, for the exhibition in oranienbaum.
